In celebration of this year’s World Science Day, Atlanticare Support Initiative (ASI) held an outreach and counseling session at Government College Makurdi, aimed at encouraging students to pursue science courses and careers.
ASI President, Andrew Gabriel, highlighted the initiative's goal: to inspire young minds towards science-based professions that contribute to national innovation and technological advancement. He noted with concern the declining enrolment in science classes, attributed to the fear of subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Gabriel expressed ASI’s commitment to demystifying these subjects and boosting students' confidence in their ability to excel in them.
“The choice of a public school for this outreach is crucial,” Gabriel remarked, “as many students here come from modest backgrounds and may lack access to foundational resources for quality science education.”
Dr. (Mrs.) Brenda Oke, a lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi and one of the resource speakers, shared her own early struggles with science subjects. Through dedication, she overcame these challenges, eventually becoming a science educator. She encouraged the students to let go of their fears, emphasizing that they can succeed in any subject with the right mindset and commitment./p>
Students Moses Terna and Marvelous Daudu voiced their newfound enthusiasm for science, inspired by ASI's counseling and determined to continue their studies in the field to support Nigeria's development.
The Principal of Government College Makurdi, Mrs. Aumbur Agena, commended ASI for their efforts, noting that motivating students to pursue sciences is essential for a better future.
The event concluded with a science quiz competition, where students received prizes and certificates, further fueling their interest in science. Correspondent Fanen Gbor reports that ASI’s initiative was both impactful and well-received, inspiring many students to envision a future in science.
