Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS)

The Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) is a non-profit organization based in Canada that focuses on improving surgical care and healthcare capacity in low-resource settings worldwide. CNIS works collaboratively with local partners, healthcare professionals, and international organizations to address the significant gaps in surgical care in many parts of the world, particularly in Africa.

The organization was founded in 1995 by Dr. Ronald Lett, a Canadian surgeon, with the goal of providing sustainable solutions to the lack of access to safe surgery, anesthesia, and obstetric care in resource-limited settings. CNIS believes that access to surgical care is a fundamental human right and is essential for achieving global health equity.

CNIS's approach involves training local healthcare providers in essential surgical skills, including trauma care, obstetrics, anesthesia, and emergency surgery. They offer a range of educational programs, workshops, and hands-on training sessions designed to empower local healthcare workers and build their capacity to deliver safe and effective surgical care in their communities.

In addition to training, CNIS also advocates for improved surgical infrastructure, access to essential surgical equipment and supplies, and the integration of surgical services into existing healthcare systems. They work closely with governments, healthcare institutions, and international partners to promote policies and practices that prioritize surgical care as part of comprehensive healthcare delivery.

They are also committed to empowering low-income countries to create an environment where the risk from injuries is minimal and that all people receive adequate healthcare.
